Ready for the Career Expo?

One of the main spring events the Career Center offers is the Career Expo. The biggest thing to do for the Career Expo is to be prepared for the event. A lot of times a representative of a company can quickly lose interest if an individual is lacking information or enthusiasm. A career expo is defined as a fair for employers, recruiters and schools to meet with prospective job seekers.

The following is a list of things that you can do to prepare for the Expo:

Update your resume. One great way to gain the interest from a company representative is to bring your resume with you to the Career Expo. If you do not have an updated resume, click here to get tips on what you should and should not include. Once you have updated your resume, proofread it carefully to eliminate misspelled words or punctuation mistakes. Those are two quick ways to cause an employer to lose interest.

Ask good questions. Be sure that you take some time before the Career Expo to develop some generic questions that you will be able to ask representatives. Questions are great was to spark conversations and interest as well.

Dress to impress. Expo attendees should be sporting their best business professional gear. This means that mean should wear a buttoned shirt and tie with slacks and dress shoes, and for women slacks or skirt would be fine. Leave your club wear at home. No extremely tall heels should be worn when going to the Expo or an interview. Another thing not to wear would be sparkly and excessively shiny clothing.

dress for success

Now that you have prepared yourself for the Career Expo you will need a few tips of what to do once arriving.

  • Be sure to arrive early
  • Take your time while talking to representatives
  • Have a firm handshake and maintain good eye contact
  • Do Not bring drinks or chew gum
  • Be friendly, mature, and sincere

These are a few ways to ensure that you are properly prepared for the Career Expo.

After the Career Expo is over, you should not think that your job is over. Make sure that you contact each representative that you spoke with and send them a personal thank you message. For more information about the Career Expo, check this out!

Black and Gold Business Attire

Here at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke we have a lot of career orientated students that are always looking for new things to be exposed to as far as developing their career goals. Here at the University Career Center our goal is to make sure that our students follow through on their dreams and aspirations of being successful upon graduation. We help them with resumes, cover letters, mock interview, and much more. In my opinion the most important thing is how a person dresses for an occasion. When you are meeting someone for the first time it only takes 3-5 seconds to make a first impression, and many people know that a first impression is a lasting impression. In the Career Center we focus on teaching students how to dress appropriately and act accordingly when in a business setting.

The reason we have implemented the Black and Gold Business Attire Idea is to showcase those students on the campus that have on appropriate business attire. It is simple to do, take a business picture through Instagram and in the caption simply use the tag #hireuncp, and the Career Center does the work for you. We post the picture with that hashtag to our Facebook and Twitter accounts and we share business attire photos with the world. This is a great way to help our students here at UNC Pembroke. We want to make sure that we showcase our students on campus who are dressed to impress and who are ready for the job. This is also a great way to start preparing students for what they should expect once they go into the business world and start their careers.

Why The Career Center?

Once you embark on the journey if becoming a college graduate, you start to get involved in things that are known as resume builders. College is filled with leadership opportunities, the only thin is that you must go find them because they are not going to just fall in your lap. Most colleges/universities have what is known as a career center. This is your pit stop to success, a place where you can get advise and answers on any college campus.

Resumes, one of the biggest things college students work on, especially those who will be graduating soon. The career center helps you organize your resume and makes it look presentable. The career center at UNCP ha one solid goal, to make sure that you have the best chance o employment during and after college. Their job in the career center is to make sure you get a job. Your resume is your ticket into the door, it will either make you or break you. What you might not know is that more employers are beginning to look at social media platforms a lot more.

Why is social media so important? Social media tells you a lot about a person, the true person that will be representing their organizations. That is why it is important to make sure that you be aware of what you are sharing with the world because it might be what will hold you back from employment.

What if I have an alias name on my twitter account? That does not make a difference, there are ways of linking a persons twitter account with a person even if the names don’t match. There are other ways to determine twitter accounts and most of the time people link their twitter account with other accounts that are in their name. Remember that everything is connected, some connections are closer than others.

What is the best social network to use to impress employers? The best social network to use in LinkedIn LinkedIn the number one professional network in the world. LinkedIn is a highly indexed website meaning that it is one of the websites to pop up if your name is placed in a search engine (google, yahoo, bing, etc.). Are you on LinkedIn? If you’re not it’s time to think about increasing your marketability.

Have you ever wanted to know your flaws when you are being interviewed? At the career center, you can ask for a mock interview and your interview will be recorded. In that videotape you will be able to see some of the things that you do wrong and might no realize. It is better to show you, than to tell you.

For those individuals who don’t really know what they want to do yet and what major they want to partake in, go to major madness. Major Madness is a session hosted by the career center to increase your understanding about majors that you might be unclear on.

If you don’t go by the career center, you are really putting yourself in an disadvantage for your future endeavors. Continue to do what needs to be done to succeed in this economy.

Social Media Questions To Ask Yourself

Social Media is a major asset in the world today but it is also a major curse in the world today. In order to keep up with the world today you have to be technological savvy which is understandable, but there are still rights and wrongs for using social media, especially Facebook and Twitter.

The next time you get a chance to get on your social media website, I challenge you to ask yourself a few questions and see if you pass the test. The questions that follow this paragraph are simple but effective and they also are the same questions employers follow to hire their employees.

Questions
1. Do I have inappropriate photos.
2. Are their comments from friends that are vulgar or include swearing.
3. Is there content about drinking
4. Is there content about illegal drugs
5. Are there negative comments about previous employers
6. Are there discriminatory comments about people or organizations
7. Lies about qualifications
8. Is there confidential information from friends or employers

Ask yourself these questions and if you answer yes to any of the following, ask yourself how you can fix it and how you can you prevent it from happening again. An important thing to remember is that once it is on the internet, it is there forever. Employers are viewing Facebook and Twitter profiles more than ever to figure out what type of people they are bringing into their business. Make sure you take the right steps to brand yourself positively.

One Word

20120112-171622.jpg

A lot of people might wonder what #oneword2012 actually is, this is where we will define it in detail.

What the goal of one word 2012 is for a person to brainstorm about one word that he/she will work on and implement into their lives for the year 2012.

For example I chose the word brand, I chose this word to encourage me to push myself to increase my marketability as well as the organizations that I am a part of. Remember that branding can Improve what people perceive about a certain person or thing, and I have learned that perception is reality.

When you pick a word, make it one that is your own, something that will motivate you to step out of your box. This will allow you to be introduced to new things and help improve skills that you already possess. If you are having a hard time it is good to go talk to your adviser or someone that you feel comfortable with as you talk about career goals you may have. When you pick your one word it will teach you about meeting and setting goals as well as improving yourself. The great thing to know is that when you prove yourself, you improve the people around you.

This word might not come to you in 20 or 30 minutes, and it is not something that you want to rush because it is more than just a word, it is going to be a way of life. A good thing to do is to go to a career coach or The Career Center and ask someone to help you implement your word. The main reason you should talk to a career coach is to receive guidance to go in the right direction.

Please share with us what your word is for 2012 and how you plan to implement it.
